Labor Day Eats in the Loop
Labor Day weekend in Chicago doesn’t just mean a long weekend. It means that the 32nd annual Jazzfest, happening September 2–5 at various locations, including Millennium Park, Grant Park and the Chicago Cultural Center, is upon us. If you’re headed to the fest, or are just heading to the neighborhood to celebrate the long weekend, here are some suggestions for where to grab some grub. Don’t agree with our picks? The Gage: Chef Dirk Flanigan’s Scotch egg and house poutine smothered in elk meat and cheese curds will sop up all the beer you just drank at the fest pretty nicely. If you want to keep the party going, the seasonal cocktail list will do you fine (312-372-4243; reserve online).
Hannah’s Bretzel: A whole slew of organic-and-local-skewing, internationally inspired sandwiches served up on hot pretzel bread awaits all who enter (312-621-1111).
Oasis Café: You’ll have to duck down below the elevated train lines on Wabash and ford a ton of jewelry counters to find this quick-service Middle Eastern spot. But if you do, you’ll be rewarded with what is probably the best falafel in Chicago (21 N Wabash Ave.; 312-558-1058).
Pastoral: Your one-stop shop for making a take-away upscale picnic for the fest. It also happens to be one of Chicago’s top fromageries, so if you only need a bit of cheese, don’t miss it (53 E. Lake St.; 312-658-1250).
Pizanos: Everyone knows that Chicago is the home of deep-dish pizza, but that also generally means it’s the home of super-cheesy, indigestion-causing gut bombs. Pizano’s is one place that gets the proportions right. There’s plenty of cheese and sauce, but the buttery crispy crust is a little thinner and tastes nothing like the hundreds of cardboard imitators out there (312-236-1777).
Seven on State: Takashi’s noodles, Rick Bayless’ Frontera Fresca, and Marc Burger from Marcus Samuelsgson might all be in a glorified mall food court, but what glories (luscious noodles, spicy huaraches and juicy burgers) they offer (111 N. State, in Macy’s).
